As I was browsing a book today, Mastering Turbulence by McCann and Selsky, they were discussing when learning fails as a result of our normal methods being overwhelmed by constant change. They offered a replacement model based on five awareness processes:
- Scanning: Searching the environment for information to detect stage and saliency of ideas, events, and trends.
- Sensemaking: Giving meaning to what is scanned in terms of patterns of relationships and implications for the organization.
- Shaping: Preparing and communicating the knowledge generated in the best form for taking action based upon it.
- Sharing: Making knowledge accessible and available at the right time and place for the right people to act on it.
- Storing: Creating readily searchable and accessible archives of knowledge for subsequent use by others.
This information is not earth shattering in itself but how does your organization rate in each of these five areas? What about each department? Each team? Are tools in place to accomplish this?
What about your external world?
How do you rate your sales and marketing team on customer awareness?
